Press Release

A press release is an official written announcement distributed by an organization to share news, updates, achievements, events, product launches, leadership changes, research findings, or other significant developments with journalists, media outlets, stakeholders, and the public. It is a key tool in public relations (PR) used to generate media attention and communicate important information in a structured format.

Organizations use press releases to increase visibility, establish credibility, support reputation management, announce milestones, and create opportunities for media coverage. A well-developed press release typically includes:

  • Headline: A clear and compelling summary of the announcement.
  • Dateline: The location and date of the release.
  • Lead Paragraph: The most important information answering who, what, when, where, why, and how.
  • Supporting Details: Additional context, background information, statistics, and relevant information.
  • Quotes: Statements from leadership, experts, partners, or stakeholders that add credibility and perspective.
  • Boilerplate: A brief description of the organization and its mission.
  • Media Contact Information: Details for journalists seeking additional information.

Organizations distribute press releases through media relations efforts, newswire services, company websites, email outreach, industry publications, and social media channels. Effective press release strategies involve identifying newsworthy stories, targeting relevant journalists, aligning announcements with audience interests, and following up with media contacts.

Organizations measure press release effectiveness through metrics such as media placements, journalist engagement, website traffic, backlinks, audience reach, social shares, brand mentions, sentiment, and business inquiries generated.

By providing credible and timely information to media and stakeholders, press releases help organizations increase awareness, strengthen brand authority, support thought leadership, and influence public perception.

For example, a nonprofit organization may issue a press release announcing a major award, community initiative, fundraising milestone, leadership appointment, or partnership to generate media coverage and increase public awareness of its mission.
