Earned Media

Earned media refers to publicity, exposure, and brand visibility that an organization receives through third-party sources without directly paying for placement. It is generated when media outlets, customers, industry experts, influencers, communities, or other external audiences voluntarily share, discuss, reference, or promote a brand, product, service, or organization.

Businesses generate earned media through strategies such as public relations (PR), media relations, thought leadership, customer advocacy, community engagement, influencer relationships, compelling storytelling, newsworthy announcements, events, and exceptional customer experiences. Common forms of earned media include news articles, interviews, reviews, social media mentions, customer testimonials, word-of-mouth recommendations, podcast appearances, industry recognition, and organic backlinks. Organizations measure earned media performance through metrics such as media coverage, audience reach, share of voice, brand mentions, sentiment analysis, referral traffic, engagement, domain authority, and estimated media value.

By building credibility through independent third-party validation, earned media helps organizations strengthen reputation, increase brand awareness, build trust, reach new audiences, and support long-term brand growth. Unlike paid advertising, earned media relies on relevance, credibility, and relationships rather than direct media purchases.

For example, a nonprofit organization may generate earned media by sharing a compelling impact story that leads to coverage from local news outlets, interviews with leadership, social media discussions, and community members sharing the organization’s mission.
