Search Intent
Search intent is the underlying goal, purpose, or motivation behind a user’s search query on a search engine. It represents what a person is trying to accomplish when they enter a search term, such as finding information, researching options, making a purchase, locating a business, or completing a specific action.
Organizations use search intent analysis to create more relevant content, improve search engine optimization (SEO), optimize advertising campaigns, and better understand customer needs throughout the buying journey. Common types of search intent include:
- Informational Intent: Users are seeking knowledge, answers, explanations, or educational resources (e.g., “how does email marketing work?”).
- Navigational Intent: Users are looking for a specific website, brand, product, or location (e.g., searching for a company name).
- Transactional Intent: Users are ready to take an action, such as purchasing a product, booking a service, or requesting information.
- Commercial Investigation Intent: Users are researching options, comparing solutions, or evaluating providers before making a decision.
Businesses analyze search intent through keyword research, search engine results page (SERP) analysis, customer journey mapping, audience research, and marketing analytics. Organizations measure search intent alignment through metrics such as organic traffic quality, keyword rankings, click-through rates (CTR), engagement, conversion rates, and lead generation.
By understanding search intent, organizations can create content and experiences that better match what audiences need at each stage of their decision-making process. It is a critical component of search engine optimization (SEO), content strategy, digital marketing, and customer journey planning.
For example, a user searching “best accounting software for small businesses” likely has commercial investigation intent, while someone searching “how to calculate business taxes” likely has informational intent. A business can use these insights to create targeted content that guides users toward the appropriate next step.
