Brand Advocacy
Brand advocacy is the practice of encouraging and empowering satisfied customers, employees, partners, or supporters to actively promote and recommend a brand through authentic personal experiences and positive word-of-mouth. Brand advocates voluntarily share their support through reviews, testimonials, referrals, social media conversations, community participation, and personal recommendations, helping influence the perceptions and decisions of others.
Organizations build brand advocacy by delivering exceptional customer experiences, creating strong relationships, providing valuable products or services, engaging communities, recognizing supporters, and developing programs that encourage participation. Common brand advocacy strategies include customer referral programs, ambassador programs, user-generated content (UGC) campaigns, testimonials, online reviews, social media engagement, employee advocacy initiatives, and community-building efforts. Organizations measure advocacy through metrics such as Net Promoter Score (NPS), referrals, reviews, social media mentions, engagement rates, customer retention, brand sentiment, and customer lifetime value (CLV).
By turning customers and supporters into trusted voices for a brand, advocacy helps organizations increase credibility, strengthen loyalty, expand reach, and reduce reliance on traditional advertising. Because recommendations from real people often carry greater trust than promotional messages, brand advocacy is an important component of customer experience (CX), community marketing, public relations, and long-term brand growth.
For example, a nonprofit organization may develop brand advocacy by encouraging volunteers and supporters to share personal stories, participate in awareness campaigns, and recommend the organization’s mission within their communities.
