User-Generated Content (UGC)

User-Generated Content (UGC) is original content created and shared by customers, fans, employees, or members of a community rather than by a brand itself. This content may include photos, videos, reviews, testimonials, social media posts, blog articles, product demonstrations, unboxing videos, and other forms of customer-created media that showcase personal experiences with a brand, product, or service.

Businesses use user-generated content as part of marketing strategies to build authenticity, increase engagement, strengthen customer relationships, and encourage community participation. Common UGC campaigns include branded hashtags, customer reviews, social media challenges, contests, product testimonials, influencer collaborations, and customer spotlights. Organizations often measure UGC performance through metrics such as engagement rates, content submissions, reach, impressions, conversions, brand mentions, and audience sentiment.

By highlighting real customer experiences, UGC helps brands build trust, enhance credibility, create social proof, and generate authentic content that resonates with target audiences. Because consumers often value recommendations from other customers, user-generated content can influence purchasing decisions and support brand loyalty while reducing the reliance on traditional promotional messaging.

For example, a travel company may encourage customers to share photos and videos from their trips using a branded hashtag, then feature selected customer experiences across its website and social media channels to inspire future travelers.
