Cost Per Acquisition (CPA)
Cost Per Acquisition (CPA) is a marketing performance metric that measures the average cost an organization spends to acquire one customer, lead, conversion, or desired action from a marketing campaign. It helps businesses evaluate the efficiency and profitability of their advertising and customer acquisition efforts.
Organizations calculate CPA by dividing the total cost of a marketing campaign by the number of acquisitions generated. An acquisition may refer to different outcomes depending on the campaign objective, such as a completed purchase, qualified lead, account registration, consultation request, app download, or subscription.
The basic formula is:
CPA = Total Marketing Cost ÷ Number of Acquisitions
Organizations use CPA to evaluate marketing channels, optimize advertising budgets, compare campaign performance, and determine whether customer acquisition efforts are financially sustainable. CPA analysis is commonly used across paid search, social media advertising, display advertising, affiliate marketing, email campaigns, and other digital marketing initiatives.
Organizations measure CPA alongside other performance indicators such as conversion rate, customer lifetime value (CLV), return on ad spend (ROAS), customer acquisition cost (CAC), click-through rate (CTR), and revenue generated.
By monitoring CPA, organizations can identify which campaigns and channels generate customers most efficiently, reduce wasted marketing spend, improve targeting, and make more informed decisions about growth investments.
For example, if a company spends $5,000 on a digital advertising campaign and gains 100 new customers, the CPA is $50 per acquired customer. The organization can compare this cost against the average customer value to determine whether the campaign is effective.
