Supply-Side Platform (SSP)

A Supply-Side Platform (SSP) is a technology platform used by publishers, website owners, app developers, and digital content providers to manage, sell, and optimize their available advertising inventory to advertisers. SSPs automate the process of offering digital ad space through programmatic advertising marketplaces, helping publishers maximize revenue from their audiences.

Organizations use SSPs to connect their available advertising inventory with demand from advertisers, advertising agencies, and demand-side platforms (DSPs). SSPs enable automated buying and selling through real-time bidding (RTB), where advertisers compete for ad placements based on audience characteristics, impressions, and campaign goals. Common SSP capabilities include inventory management, audience data integration, pricing optimization, yield management, fraud prevention, reporting, and performance analytics.

Organizations measure SSP effectiveness through metrics such as fill rate, cost per thousand impressions (CPM), ad revenue, inventory utilization, viewability rates, advertiser demand, and overall yield optimization.

By improving the efficiency of digital advertising transactions, SSPs help publishers increase revenue, provide advertisers with access to quality inventory, and create a more automated and data-driven advertising ecosystem. They are a key component of the programmatic advertising infrastructure that connects publishers with advertisers.

For example, a news website may use an SSP to make its advertising space available to multiple advertisers, allowing automated systems to select the highest-value ad placement for each visitor while maximizing the publisher’s advertising revenue.
