Real-Time Bidding (RTB)

Real-Time Bidding (RTB) is an automated digital advertising process in which advertisers compete in real time to purchase individual ad impressions through online auctions. When a user visits a website or app that contains advertising space, an automated auction occurs within milliseconds, allowing advertisers to bid on the opportunity to display an ad to that specific user based on audience data, targeting criteria, and campaign objectives.

Businesses use RTB as part of programmatic advertising strategies to purchase digital ad inventory efficiently across websites, mobile applications, streaming platforms, and other digital environments. The RTB process typically involves advertisers, demand-side platforms (DSPs), supply-side platforms (SSPs), ad exchanges, and publishers. Advertisers use audience targeting, behavioral data, contextual signals, and campaign settings to determine which impressions are valuable and how much they are willing to pay. Performance is measured through metrics such as impressions, click-through rates (CTR), conversions, cost per thousand impressions (CPM), cost per acquisition (CPA), return on ad spend (ROAS), and return on investment (ROI).

By automating the buying and selling of digital advertising inventory, RTB enables advertisers to reach relevant audiences at scale, optimize campaigns in real time, improve advertising efficiency, and make data-driven media purchasing decisions. It is a core technology behind modern programmatic advertising and digital media buying.

For example, an online travel company may use RTB to bid for ad placements when users who have recently searched for vacations visit related websites. The system evaluates the user’s interests, location, and browsing behavior, then automatically decides whether to bid for the available ad impression and display a relevant travel advertisement.
