BACKGROUND
Pelagion is an advanced materials science and nanotechnology company focused on developing battery energy storage systems engineered for high-performance and environmentally demanding applications. Recognizing growing interest in marine electrification, sustainability, and safer alternatives to conventional propulsion, the company identified an opportunity to demonstrate how advanced battery systems could perform within harsh maritime environments.
At the time of engagement, Pelagion was developing a proprietary battery energy storage system designed to be waterproof, fire-resistant, durable, and capable of supporting demanding marine applications. Rather than introducing the technology solely through technical specifications or industrial use cases, a strategic decision was made to create a proof of concept capable of visibly demonstrating the battery system’s performance, safety, and commercial potential in a real-world environment.
That proof of concept became the HydroBlade, a high-performance electric hydrofoil watercraft (eFoil) designed to showcase Pelagion’s energy technology through an aspirational and highly visible marine application. Unlike traditional stand-up jet skis, HydroBlade utilizes hydrofoil wings that lift the board above the water at higher speeds, reducing drag and allowing riders to glide silently above the surface. Entirely electric and zero-emission, the HydroBlade demonstrated advanced steering, performance, and marine mobility while serving as a market-facing example of the broader capabilities of Pelagion’s battery energy storage system.
Pelagion engaged Grozina to support branding, visual identity, and a marketing and communications strategy to help translate a sophisticated energy innovation into a commercially understandable and compelling market narrative.
CHALLENGE
Pelagion needed a way to make advanced battery technology visible, credible, and easier for customers, partners, investors, and marine stakeholders to understand. The company required a clear visual identity, product positioning, and communications framework capable of transforming a sophisticated energy system into a compelling, real-world story centered around innovation, performance, and practical application.
As a proof of concept, the HydroBlade needed to demonstrate technological credibility while also presenting as a premium marine innovation capable of generating excitement around the future of electrified mobility.
STRATEGIC APPROACH
EXECUTION HIGHLIGHTS
RESULTS AND IMPACT
Branding, product marketing, visual identity, launch materials, and public relations efforts strengthened awareness of both the HydroBlade and Pelagion’s broader battery energy storage capabilities. Product storytelling translated a highly technical innovation into a more commercially understandable market narrative, strengthening brand visibility and supporting investor readiness leading into Pelagion’s later appearance on Shark Tank Season 17. Most importantly, HydroBlade established a visible proof of concept for Pelagion’s battery technology — demonstrating how advanced energy systems could perform safely and effectively in demanding marine environments.
